Jewelry Styles 101: Necklace Lengths

Now let's get to know our necklaces. Whether you're choosing one for a night out or building a multi-layered look, this measurement guide will come in handy.

CHOKER (14 inches)

Choker necklaces fit snugly around the middle of your neck. For a more flattering look, make sure your choker is not on too tight. This style is best worn with low-neckline dresses or tops or those that show off the collarbone.

COLLAR (16 inches)

Collar necklaces sit comfortably at the base of your neck where most collars on button-down shirts finish. Bib necklaces are most associated with this length. If you have an angular face shape, you will find shorter necklaces are perfect for softening your look.

PRINCESS (18 inches)

The princess necklace gets a bit more breathing room and drops down to the upper-chest area. This is the standard necklace length (17 to 18 inches) and is the easiest to wear.

MATINEE (20-24 inches)

The matinee necklace generally hits mid-chest and leans towards a casual afternoon look. Think beaded necklaces and longer pendants. This length looks great with high-collar outfits and with shorter necklaces if you want to go for a layered look.

OPERA (30 inches)

The opera necklace scoops below the breast and pairs nicely with more formal frocks. It is often worn for evening wear but you can also make it work for the office.

ROPE OR CHAIN LARIAT (33 inches)

This is the most dramatic necklace length, hanging near the waist. Longer necklaces in general look better on women with taller frames.
